HbA1c was the most common diagnostic test to evaluate the diabetes status and management in an individual. But now another very important parameter has come into play which is known as the Time-in-range or TIR. it is the amount of time, those with diabetes spend, with their blood glucose levels in a recommended target range and is represented as a percentage. For most people with type I or type II diabetes, a TIR above 70 is recommended. The target should be to spend less than 4% (58minutes) below 70mg/dl, less than 1% (14minutes) below 54 mg/dl, less than 25% (6 hrs) above 180mg/dl and less than 5% (1 hr 12 minutes) above 250mg/dl. TIR targets can be lower for older or high-risk individuals and for those younger than age 25.
